Midmark Introduces New Patient Support Rails for Industry- Leading Exam Tables to Enhance Patient Safety

Dayton, OH
DAYTON, Ohio, Oct. 26, 2015 — Midmark Corporation, a leading medical solutions provider and trusted leader in digital diagnostic devices for ambulatory care, recently introduced Midmark Patient Support Rails that are designed to provide patients with security and support throughout the examination process. The support rails are available on new purchases and also retrofit onto Midmark 625 and Ritter 223 and 222 exam tables already in the field.

The Midmark Patient Support Rails are designed to help improve the exam experience by providing a continuous gripping surface for positioning disabled, elderly, obese and pregnant patients. The removable and adjustable side rail system features 1-inch diameter gripping surface designed to be easier to grasp, helping reduce the likeliness of patient or caregiver injury. The robust and rigid construction of the rail system is ideal for offering sturdy support for patients with mobility challenges, providing an affixed gripping point for them to independently raise themselves onto and off of the table.

“As a company on the forefront of healthcare design, Midmark is committed to providing solutions that enhance the patient-caregiver interaction while improving efficiency and effectiveness in the exam room. We want to help ensure patients and caregivers feel safe and confident throughout the experience,” said Kurt Forsthoefel, marketing director, medical products and services, Midmark. “The Midmark Patient Support Rails help healthcare organizations provide a safer, more efficient office visit and help prepare the ambulatory exam space for expected new federal requirements for exam tables and transfer supports.”

The patient support rails lock at horizontal 0 degrees (the home position) and have the ability to vertically rotate into three additional locked positions, two of which are elevated (15 and 30 degrees) and one that is vertical (105 degrees). In the vertical position the rails provide a grab support to the patient who is standing while accessing the exam table. Caregivers can also position the rails 180 degrees from the home position to allow access to a seated patient during an exam and help improve safety for patients in supine, prone or left/right lateral positions.

Midmark was a leading member of the US Access Board’s Medical Diagnostic Equipment Accessibility Standards Advisory Committee. This advisory committee was created to establish recommendations for accessibility standards of medical diagnostic equipment under the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.”

The advisory committee intends for these recommendations to establish the foundation for future development of accessible medical equipment. These recommendations included guidance that accessible exam tables and chairs offer patient support rails on both sides of the transfer surface that are movable or removable to support during transfer. At this time, the US Access Board has yet to finalize recommended standards. Current status of rulemaking is available at http://www.access-board.gov/guidelines-and-standards/health-care
