Virginia Mason Using Midmark RTLS Workflow Solution at Bainbridge Island Medical Center

DAYTON, Ohio, Oct. 2, 2018— Midmark RTLS*, a leading provider of patient flow, staff workflow, and asset tracking technology, today announced Virginia Mason is using the company’s Patient Flow Optimization solution for clinics to reduce wait times, improve exam room utilization and streamline patient visits at its new Bainbridge Island Medical Center.

Projected to serve over 250 patients a day, the 30,000 square-foot outpatient clinic replaces an aging facility which opened in 1945. More than double the size of the previous location, the Bainbridge Island clinic offers a wide range of primary care for adults and children, as well as specialty services including oncology, cardiology, orthopedics, dermatology and neurology.

To facilitate patient visits and enhance throughput, the Midmark real-time locating system (RTLS) provides patient location and wait time details. Patients, providers and staff wear lightweight locator badges that automatically update the Patient Flow Optimization software, giving staff a bird’s-eye view of where patients are, how long they’ve been waiting, who has seen them, and who needs to see them next.

Patients receive badges at registration and head straight to their exam room bypassing the waiting room altogether.  To fast-track exam room assignments, staff review automatically-updated, on-screen room status information – available, occupied, reserved and to be cleaned. This “self-rooming” concept is designed to enhance the patient experience by minimizing wait times and reducing exposure to other patients with potential contagions.

As patients progress through various stages of the visit, automated cues and real-time data presented on electronic white boards allow staff to make in-the-moment adjustments to improve efficiencies and adjust resources to reduce patient waiting.

Midmark RTLS also captures an enormous amount of historical data. Using the Reports Plus Analytics software, practice administrators can assess data on patient wait times, room utilization, and more. Retrospective insight provides evidence to support ongoing process improvement efforts.
