How to Deploy RTLS Asset Management for Capital Savings

One of the biggest pressures biomedical techs face each day is locating medical equipment for maintenance. Locating mobile assets in a busy hospital is often like finding a needle in a haystack—you spend hours searching for the equipment you need, sometimes to no avail.

Meanwhile, the Joint Commission expects 100% completion of scheduled preventive maintenance, and caregivers need immediate access to properly maintained equipment to provide patient care.

Being unable to find equipment feels like a daily battle that, unfortunately, is out of your control. Or is it?

Luckily, it’s not. A real-time locating system (RTLS) allows you to see the location of your medical equipment fleet in your hospital and manage equipment distribution, so that hunting for it becomes a non-issue. Fulfilling preventive maintenance, device recalls and security patches becomes much easier when you can find the equipment you need to work on!

But time savings isn’t the only benefit of RTLS. Perhaps an even greater benefit is capital savings, which is the ROI you need to convince your boss that RTLS is a worthy investment. Assets are only used 30-40% of the time, but with Midmark RTLS, utilization rates increase, resulting in capital savings on equipment purchases.

We recently hosted a webinar with HIStalk for those considering RTLS for Asset Tracking & Management in their hospital, including five things that you should consider in your decision process:

  1. Long- and Short-Term Goals: Is your goal to simply see where assets are or to proactively manage your asset inventory?
  2. Total Cost of Ownership: Which RTLS provides the best long-term value? There are many factors that make up the cost of an RTLS.
  3. Which assets to track: Fleet size, mobility and value all factor into this decision.
  4. Replenishment design: What processes will you put in place to ensure that equipment is available to caregivers?
  5. Accuracy of Location: Do you need exact location data or do you only need a general location of your assets?
