At Midmark, our primary commitment is making sure our healthcare clients have the innovative equipment, technologies and approaches they need to deliver quality care and contribute to better outcomes for all. But sometimes, making a difference requires us to step out of the ambulatory care setting and have important conversations about the future of care delivery and the overall evolution of the healthcare sector.

Midmark representatives participating in healthcare industry advocacy on Capitol Hill

This is what recently brought me, and a number of my industry colleagues, to our nation’s capital in late June. I had the privilege of once again participating in the Health Industry Distributors Association (HIDA) Washington Summit . It’s something I’ve been doing for the last eight years. And before me, it was our President and CEO, Jon Wells.

This annual event is an opportunity for healthcare supply chain leaders, distributor executives and manufacturing representatives to take part in expert-led policy sessions and peer discussions. It also provides an invaluably rare opportunity to meet with lawmakers and policymakers to discuss the issues facing the healthcare industry. These conversations focus on the challenges and opportunities impacting equipment, the supply chain and the broader healthcare ecosystem.

Participating in healthcare industry policy advocacy is an essential part of being a responsible industry steward and thought leader. It’s an obligation and responsibility we have to our customers, partners, industry and teammates. By actively playing a part in the decisions that influence the future of our industry, we are ensuring the voices of healthcare equipment providers and distributors, as well as our customers, are represented.

It allows us to bring together our wealth of experience and insight and coordinate around a unified message and position. We are sharing real-world perspectives on the policies that directly impact the overall affordability, sustainability and reliability of the healthcare supply chain. These discussions help bridge the gap between policy and practice.

Advancing Healthcare Supply Chain Resilience

This year, much of the summit focused on healthcare supply chain resilience, including how tariffs and trade barriers can drive up operational costs, contribute to price increases and create supply chain bottlenecks and extended lead times. Many of the discussions centered on medical supply chain policy, including the Medical Supply Chain Resiliency Act,, which is designed to strengthen the reliability and security of the US healthcare supply chain. Key objectives of the act, include:

  • Lowering or removing taxes and import limits on medical devices, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing inputs with allied nations.
  • Expanding and securing reliable supply sources across trusted countries to prevent critical shortages during public health crises.
  • Harmonizing rules and standards with international partners to speed up the cross-border flow of essential health equipment.

Members of our delegation broke into 14 groups and, led by HIDA facilitators, had a total of 85 meetings with representatives and senators. I took part in six of those meetings. What surprises me every year is how willing the elected officials and their staff are to speak with us and how knowledgeable they are on the topics we are discussing. And to me, that is the most encouraging part of this whole exercise. When speaking to them, it’s obvious they value our perspective and genuinely want to do what they can to address our concerns.

Beyond the Summit

The HIDA Washington Summit is just one example of how Midmark strives to advocate for the health and future of our industry. For one thing, the conversations we have during the summit do not end when we leave Washington DC. We continue to have email exchanges with members of Congress or their staffers where they ask for additional information or insight.

We also host visits from national, state and local dignitaries to our main campus in Versailles. Recently, Congressman Warren Davidson, US representative for Ohio’s 8th congressional district, visited our headquarters and met with Jon Wells. They discussed the current state of the healthcare sector and the vital role Midmark plays.

When possible, we also work closely with governing organizations within the federal government and our industry when they are developing regulations and standards that impact the delivery of care. This is done with care to ensure our voice and insight is heard and considered during the process. A significant example of this is the US Access Board’s 2017 and 2024 standards for medical diagnostic equipment.

It is important to note that this sort of advocacy is not just happening on the medical side of our business. Our dental and veterinary teams are actively involved in the same level of advocacy and collaboration with their respective industry organizations and issues. For instance, our Dental team works closely with the Dental Trade Alliance (DTA), while our Veterinary team works closely with the United Veterinary Services Association (UVSA).

Industries thrive when organizations take responsibility not only for their own success but for the health and performance of the sector as a whole. This is something we take very seriously at Midmark. The delivery of care is constantly evolving. New technologies, changing patient needs and shifting regulations require thoughtful policies that support innovation while protecting patient care and outcomes. By participating in these important conversations, Midmark helps ensure that these policies reflect the realities of modern care delivery.
