Part 3 of “Small Design Details that Make a Big Difference in the Operatory.”

When choosing dental cabinetry, it’s natural to focus on the big picture: layout, storage capacity, durability and aesthetics. But some of the features that make the biggest difference in daily use can be found in places you might not think to look.

Like inside the drawers.

From keeping supplies organized and within reach to simplifying cleanup, drawer design can make a difference in your team’s daily workflow.

Here are three drawer-design details worth considering when evaluating dental cabinetry.

Full Drawer Access—and Hardware Built for the Job

1. Full Drawer Access—and Hardware Built for the Job

A drawer may offer plenty of storage space, but how much of that space can you easily access?

When drawers open only partway, supplies stored at the back can be difficult to see and retrieve. Full-extension slides allow drawers to open fully, making it easier to locate and access supplies from front to back.

Since the slides support the weight of the drawer and everything stored inside, durable construction and weight capacity are also important considerations—particularly in cabinetry that sees frequent daily use.

What to look for: Open drawers completely. Can you easily see and reach everything inside? Can the drawer accommodate bins or dividers to help organize frequently used supplies? Do the drawers move smoothly and feel sturdy when fully extended? For clinical-grade cabinetry, slides should be rated to support at least 75 pounds.

Rounded Corners for Easier Cleaning

2. Rounded Corners for Easier Cleaning

Cleaning a drawer may sound simple—and it often is—until you’re trying to remove dust and debris from sharp 90-degree interior corners and along crevices.

Drawers with rounded interior corners eliminate tight angles where debris can become trapped, making it easier to wipe the entire surface clean. And one-piece drawer bodies eliminate seams and joints where debris or spilled materials could otherwise collect and complicate cleanup.

What to look for: Check inside drawers for smooth surfaces, rounded corners and minimal seams or joints to help simplify cleaning as part of your practice’s infection prevention protocols.

3. A Soft Close to Help Reduce Wear

In a busy operatory, drawers may be opened and closed repeatedly throughout the day. Soft-close functionality slows the drawer before it shuts, helping reduce repeated impact from slamming and minimize wear over time.

It can also contribute to a quieter clinical environment—another small detail that can improve the experience for both patients and the dental team.

What to look for: Open and close drawers several times. Do they move smoothly and close gently without slamming?
